Inauguration


We'll be "attending" Inauguration from the comforts of our house, since it's very likely to be extremely crowded on the Metro, extremely cold (although perhaps not as cold as yesterday), and we'll be able to eat our lunch while applauding.



The lunch menu is the tricky part. What should we dine on in honor of this historic occasion? Should we aim for a multi-cultural buffet of dishes that represent all the influences upon our country? Or should we go with the patriotic "red, white, and blue" theme? How about basic comfort food? Perhaps the traditional meal of Jews at Christmas (and other non-Jewish holidays), i.e., take-out Chinese? The All-American pizza and beer? Something new, that we've never tried before? Easy food in the slow cooker, so we can focus on the events unfolding before us?



Maybe we should just fast. Y'know, eat afterwards.



I want to hear President Obama's speech. I hope it will be like Abraham Lincoln's second inaugural address, in which he ended with these famous words:

" With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations."

Does your dining options mean that you will be applauding with your mouth full holding a sandwich between your teeth?

How about soup through a straw. That would allow your hands to be free for clapping or pumping your fist in the air. However, it does eliminate the chance to yell "atta boy" Oh well, maybe fasting is the option with the most flexibility. Good luck. Aunt M

Perhaps if we'd gotten some of those hats that fans wear to the football games..we could have put the soup on our heads.

I think fried chicken is the perfect dish. You can put it down and applaud

Mmm, fried chicken! I always like fried chicken, but I'll have to submit this one to the Committee for approval.

It certainly goes with the "All-American" theme. I think I spotted some macaroni salad in the fridge, too.

Fried chicken sounds good. The macaroni salad will need some pre-party prep. Boil up some linguini. When done, let it cool. String the macaroni salad pieces on to the linguini. Tie the linguini/macaroni string around a fried chicken leg. With one bite, you'll have a balance meal of carbs and protein. And relatively hands-free eating for the big moments of excitement.

Ah, now you're talking -- but which kind of barbecue? Texas (beef brisket), Carolina (Eastern versus Western, but all pork shoulder), Tennessee (ribs), Kentucky (pork again, but more like ham steaks), or Pennsylvania (ground beef)? And that's just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Personally, I prefer a good ol' Carolina pulled pork with some coleslaw, hush puppies, Brunswick stew, and ice tea. Mm! Them's good eatin', I garontee!

soooo, the food decision was....?
